After announincing the winners of the European Podcast Award 2010 and the national rankings we now are happy to give you the European Top 20 podcasts in each of the categories (Personality, Non-Profit, Business and Professional).
I mentioned the numbers before in the European winner announcement: Over 1.500 podcasters submitted and over 400 thousand votes where cast for their favorite podcasters. But this is not a popular vote only award, our regional editors as well as the jury have sifted through the podcasts and premiered the best of what was presented.
After the national ranking, the scores where compared again and the European ranking as you can see it below was put together. We put special emphasis on the fact that podcasters from smaller countries should also be able to rank high and not just the big countries. At the bottom we have some explanation about the ranking and some learning from 2010.
And here are the results for the Podcasts from Europe:

For the ranked podcasters: Add your social media links!
When we announce the European winner and the European Ranking, we will also update this posting. This is your chance to add the link to your web site, twitter, facebook and itunes link which will make it easier for new listeners to discover you. Go to this form and copy the name of your podcast exactly as listed in the overview and I will add additional information to this entry.
How did the ranking happen?
There are two parts to our ranking process. First, the internet ranking: We took the number of votes + content ranking (1 up to 5) + plus form (1 up to 5) = internet ranking / max 125 points.
Then each national jury member had a maximum of 500 points to distribute per podcast and for comparison reasons on an international basis we would divide that by the number of jury members per country. This allows us to compare rankings throughout Europe, even though some countries are much smaller than others. Jury points and internet ranking gave the final ranking.
The Ranking
- Internet-voting: Number of votes + content (1 up to 5) + form (1 up to 5) = ranking / max 125 points (1. =125 Points / 2. = 124 Points / 3. = 123 Points …)
- Jury: Each nominee gets max . 500 points from each member of jury – divided by number of national members plus points of internet-voting = Final Ranking
But, like for example in football, it may be that you are ranked first in your country, but the podcasters from other countries in the same category where higher ranked that yours.
Learning for the 2011 award
Like with everything you do learn along the way how to make it better, or what does or does not work. For example up until now we forgot to write down that request you to present ‘current’ episodes and we did in fact have podcasts which where good enough to rank even if they did not have a new episode out this year. 2011 will bring the requirement, that all submitted episodes for consideration have to be from 2011. We are likely to start the voting process in March, and we do believe that you should be able to produce three episodes in three months. Also, a winning podcast from this year will have to pause one year until the podcast can win again.
